Being Present: Being The Presence
The human being is a guest
house. Every morning
a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and attend them all:
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture, still,
treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
-Rumi
Decades ago I met a woman who taught the art of receiving. She said in order to receive, you have to be able and willing to receive EVERYTHING. Her focus was on accepting all emotions as they arise without pushing them away or believing they shouldn’t be felt or present. This is why I love the above quote from Rumi. WELCOME it all. The more we welcome our life the more Life welcomes us.
Early in our spiritual journey we believe things are good and bad, and we try to BE good and NOT feel bad. Energy is energy. There is no judgment on it, unless we put it there. As we learn to transform and embrace everything working for us for our Higher Good, we let our guard down a bit and surrender to Life — which actually knows what It is doing. And Rumi says, “He may be clearing you out for some new delight.”
This surrender means we lean into the NOW moment and accept what is, instead of fighting what is. Acceptance is the first step to loving, Showing up as love allows a natural transformation to take place not of our own (personality) making but of the Love Consciousness within.
So what does it mean to BE Present? First BEing is an active verb coming from the Substance of Life Itself. This is why using the words “I am…” is so powerful. Present is fully embodied in our beautiful body temple — being at home. Please give yourself the gift of occupying your home before you lay it down for good.
One of the quickest ways to become present is through our breath. As with meditation, several times throughout the day place your attention upon your breath and feel it breathing in your body. Feel your chest moving up and down and your belly inflating. Feel and notice. Within a few moments we train and allow our body to be present. Grounding is also a powerful way to get into the NOW moment. Actively feel your feet upon the ground. If you can’t feel your feet imagine that you can and wait a few weeks to see what will happen.
Being present in and to life is where each of our power lies. It is no accident that another word for God is Presence. When I am out of my body and not present, I get in accidents — stubbing my toes or worst. When I’m present in my body, alignment ensues.
I love you friend and wish for you the experience of being present and feeling The Presence,
